Chapter Six

The hall of Ivar Forkbeard was a longhouse. It was about one hundred and twenty feet Gorean in length. Its walls formed of turf and stone, were curved and thick, some eight feet or more in thickness. It is oriented north and south. This reduces its exposure to the north wind, which is particularly important in the Torvaldsland winter. A fire, in a rounded pit, was in its center. It consisted, for the most part, of a single, long room, which served for living, and eating and sleeping. At one end was a cooking compartment, separated from the rest of the house by a partition of wood. The roof was about six feet in height, which meant that most of those within, if male, were forced to bend over as they moved about. The long room, besides being low, is dark. Too, there is usually lingering smoke in it. Ventilation is supplied, as it is generally in Torvaldsland, by narrow holes in the roof. The center of the hall, down its length, is dug out about a foot below the ground level. In the long center are set the tables and benches. Also, in the center, down its length are two long rows of posts, each post separated from the next by about seven feet, which support the roof. At the edges of the hall, at ground level, is a dirt floor, on which furs are spread. Stones mark sections off into sleeping quarters. Thus, in a sense, the hall proper is about a foot below ground level, and the sleeping level, on each side, is at the ground level, where the walls begin. The sleeping levels, which also can accommodate a man’s gear, though some keep it at the foot of the level, are about eight feet in length. The hall proper, the center of the hall, is about twelve feet in width.

A most interesting description of Ivar Home... and a clue to His character

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 14:47:22 pm CDT

a good description of a Viking Long Hall. We have chatted before on the close resemblance between the Torvaldslanders and the Vikings

meral{Bretval} 14:47:54 pm CDT
JN had studied the Viking culture very well mea thinks from His descriptions

ruby~{Randolph}~t 14:48:34 pm CDT
Torvaldsland..is known for its harsh winters

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 14:48:36 pm CDT
agrees mea.

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 14:49:41 pm CDT
do they have long winter nights? as in Scandinavia? and northern Canada too I expect, Bretval??

meral{Bretval} 14:49:43 pm CDT

~smiles to Jarl~

It took mea back to her history lessons in High School

Bretval {meral}: 14:49:48 pm CDT
True Randolph... and something to remember in all the books as Tarl visits different lands in Gor...

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 14:54:16 pm CDT
has mea visited Yorvik?

ruby~{Randolph}~t 14:54:28 pm CDT

girl wondered why the building was so short in stature...knows the Torvaldslanders are very tall Men, to walk bent over, girl would think this would be uncomfortable

Bretval {meral}: 14:54:37 pm CDT
Indeed Randolph... I expect is was the last voyage before winter closed in... and very much like parts of Northern Canada... including many who came from the Scandinavian countries....

meral{Bretval} 14:54:49 pm CDT
Yes Jarl mea has

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 14:54:55 pm CDT
the interesting thing is everyone eating, sleeping together

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 14:56:12 pm CDT

yes ruby, thinks it may have something to keeping the building as low as possible to protect from the strong winds

ruby~{Randolph}~t 14:56:49 pm CDT
that makes sense my Jarl - kiss

ayli{Dak} ~chain sister to libi~ 14:57:20 pm CDT

ayli was wondering the same thing ruby

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 14:57:22 pm CDT
also with all those beautiful slaves around they weren't standing up that much

Bretval {meral}: 14:57:42 pm CDT
part of is was a lack of wood, ruby... using sod for building does limit construction... and wood was more important in ships

ruby~{Randolph}~t 14:58:54 pm CDT
aye, wood was scarce...a high premium paid for timber

meral{Bretval} 15:01:11 pm CDT
It would be a lot easier to protect Eeveryone living in the same house

Bretval {meral}: 15:02:16 pm CDT
and as Randolph said ... keeping the place warm.... and one large room with fires about can be more effective than small rooms... again limitations set by the weather

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:02:28 pm CDT

true mea, as there seems to have been many feuds and settling of scores

Bretval {meral}: 15:05:04 pm CDT
and the long winters would give the Men time to become skilled in games

Bretval {meral}: 15:05:50 pm CDT

any other comments or questions?

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:06:04 pm CDT
true Bretval, and easier to socialize if all together

ayli{Dak} ~chain sister to libi~ 15:06:19 pm CDT
none from this one Master Bretval

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:06:33 pm CDT

none here, Bretval.

meral{Bretval} 15:06:50 pm CDT
nothing from mea thank You my Master

Bretval {meral}: 15:07:54 pm CDT

Once the feast is under way, it seems that all the girls captured at Kassau, Aelgifu not excepted, are rapidly becoming accustomed to their new stations and their new names (“Pudding”, in her case), and much quaffing is going on. (I cannot do better than Terry Pratchett’s definition of this term: “like drinking, except that you spill more.”) Neither Ivar nor Tarl, however, are yet too drunk for some business talk. Tarl reveals his purpose: to hunt Kurii, and not only are these not unknown in Torvaldsland but the very holding of the Forkbeard has suffered a little minor nuisance from them. As for Ivar, he is a man with a mission:

Ivar killed the cousin of a powerful Jarl, Svein Blue Tooth, in a duel, for which the Blue Tooth declared him outlaw until a huge weregild should be paid. Controversially, Svein set this weregild at a nominally impossible sum: a hundred stone of gold, the weight of a grown man in carved sapphires, and the daughter of Thorgard of Scagnar. Plainly this ridiculous sum was fixed so that the Forkbeard should never be able to pay it and so remain outlaw for ever; but Tarl reckons up the gold plundered from Kassau and the ransom paid for the rescue of Chenbar from Tarl’s own dungeons (see the closing chapters of “Hunters of Gor”), and observes that Ivar is in a position to fulfil two out of the three conditions already. For the third, Ivar quizzes Tarl as to his opinion of Thorgard and whether he would object to Hilda’s enslavement, and Tarl admits that, as one of Port Kar, he would shed no tears if Thorgard suffered the odd reverse and, as for Hilda, he is entirely indifferent on the matter.

ruby~{Randolph}~t 15:08:12 pm CDT
perhaps that is why Jarls, are so proficient during the dance in the furs..Their swords over the bellies of the bondmaids

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:12:00 pm CDT

yes, ruby, they always had to be prepared for any eventuality

ruby~{Randolph}~t 15:13:32 pm CDT

ruby could really feel the excitement when Forkbeard returned...even naming His ship Hilda, after Thorgard of Scagners Daughter

meral{Bretval} 15:13:48 pm CDT
mea thought the way the Jarl's named Their girls was interesting

Bretval {meral}: 15:14:04 pm CDT
Possibly, ruby *grin* but it sounds very uncomfortable to Me... better to have the sword to the side

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:15:28 pm CDT
yes, mea, perhaps here we should have alternative names for the girls - a good game for the proposed games night

ruby~{Randolph}~t 15:16:19 pm CDT
it was well known too Thorgard had preyed on the ships of Port Kar, thus Tarl Red Hair, felt no allegiance

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:16:35 pm CDT

also interesting that kurii now come into the conversations

meral{Bretval} 15:16:59 pm CDT

~wonders what alternative names the Masters and Jarl's of GS would pick~

Bretval {meral}: 15:17:01 pm CDT

Another way to make it clear their status has changed, mea... named for a thing...

ruby~{Randolph}~t 15:17:17 pm CDT

likes that idea...my Master

meral{Bretval} 15:17:35 pm CDT
a good point ruby

ayli{Dak} ~chain sister to libi~ 15:17:50 pm CDT

nods agreeing with mea

ruby~{Randolph}~t 15:18:16 pm CDT

winks to mea..girl would like to be named larma

meral{Bretval} 15:18:19 pm CDT
oh yes my Master.....mea hadn't thought of it like that

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:18:33 pm CDT
Tarl also named according to his looks

meral{Bretval} 15:18:52 pm CDT

~giggles hearing ruby~

ruby~{Randolph}~t 15:20:38 pm CDT
slaves were often referred to as "tasty puddings"

meral{Bretval} 15:20:54 pm CDT

mea would like to be called martini.....grins to her Master

Bretval {meral}: 15:21:09 pm CDT

it does happen even in GS.... ruby named for a gemstone the salm as My meral began as an emerald for the colour of My eyes and shortened to meral

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:21:56 pm CDT
My mind is beginning to boggle !!!!!!!

meral{Bretval} 15:23:29 pm CDT

there is a saying here......anytime, anywhere, any place

ayli{Dak} ~chain sister to libi~ 15:23:40 pm CDT

this one got ayli by her Master by using part of her rt name she loves what it means to

ruby~{Randolph}~t 15:23:41 pm CDT

my Jarl
please Wwe can never move to Torvaldsland?...larma can not grow in the vast harsh winters

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:24:34 pm CDT
lol, mea, I was trying to figure out why martini !!!!!

meral{Bretval} 15:25:11 pm CDT

remember the old advert Jarl.....giggles

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:26:17 pm CDT

ruby, the deep furs in the long rooms and the occasional use of the martinet would make up for it

meral{Bretval} 15:26:45 pm CDT
we don't always need larma ruby.....winks

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:27:06 pm CDT
yes, mea, lol.

ruby~{Randolph}~t 15:27:33 pm CDT
gulps a hard swallow...nestles closer..indeed..remembering Oour trip to Scagnar

Bretval {meral}: 15:28:05 pm CDT

and yes the fights between the Torvaldslaner's and Port Kar are quite understandable... a large city with much loot would be an obvious target for pirates

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:28:29 pm CDT
yes, the silkies of Port Kar were looked down on

ruby~{Randolph}~t 15:30:10 pm CDT

oh...those bondmaids were so cruel...bites her lip, not to utter the "forbidden word"

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:31:21 pm CDT

seemed lovely girls to me

Bretval {meral}: 15:31:38 pm CDT
So it seems that Ivar and Tarl each consider the other’s aims entirely agreeable to themselves, and are more than willing to return a favour for a favour, to which end they toast each other in large draughts of mead, and the feasting continues unabated. The new bond-maids are eagerly serving their new masters, and by no means unwillingly so far as Tarl’s report would have it; and for himself, he orders Thyri to his furs, and we can guess what for.

ruby~{Randolph}~t 15:32:58 pm CDT
the Jarls were most hospitable to ruby...laughing

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:33:12 pm CDT
maybe he was just not used to the cold. A hot water bottle?? ??

meral{Bretval} 15:34:10 pm CDT

lol Jarl

ayli{Dak} ~chain sister to libi~ 15:34:50 pm CDT

giggles hearing Jarl Randolph

Bretval {meral}: 15:35:14 pm CDT
and now Tarl's true reason for being in Torvaldsland comes to the fore

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:35:47 pm CDT

Glances at ruby - and the FW??

JN does manage to get across the difference in attitude of both the slaves - who do have to work hard as well as the Men who essentially are permanently at war.

ruby~{Randolph}~t 15:36:04 pm CDT

indeed
the oar dance dance was wonderfully described too upon the return..requiring a superb eye and agility

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:36:50 pm CDT
The kurii, I find them more interesting than the PKs

ruby~{Randolph}~t 15:37:02 pm CDT
oh that haughty FW in Scagnar..in girls mind...called her Hilda

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:38:59 pm CDT

looks shocked that ruby should talk about a FW in that manner

ruby~{Randolph}~t 15:39:39 pm CDT

the steel wolves of space the Kurii...You did my Jarl, why?

Bretval {meral}: 15:40:18 pm CDT
indeed... who would want to hunt down a benevolent PK, Randolph... but a Kurii... made for killing by Men

meral{Bretval} 15:40:23 pm CDT
agrees with Jarl about the Kurii

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:40:52 pm CDT

probably that JN describes them in a more detailed manner so their personalities come to life

ruby~{Randolph}~t 15:41:51 pm CDT
likes the PK Misk...rubys favorite character

Bretval {meral}: 15:41:59 pm CDT

moving on...

I did not tell Ivar that those he knew as Kurii, or the beasts, were actually specimens of an alien race, that they, or those in their ships, were locked in war with Priest-Kings for the domination of two worlds, Gor and the Earth.

The Kurii I knew were beasts of fierce, terrible instincts, who regarded humans, and other beasts, as food. Blood, as to the shark, was an agitant to their systems. They were extremely powerful, and highly intelligent, though their intellectual capacities, like those of humans, were far below those of Priest-Kings. Fond of killing, and technologically advanced, they were, in their way, worthy adversaries of Priest -Kings. Most lived in ships, the steel wolves of space, their instincts bridled, to some extent, by Ship Loyalty, Ship Law. It was thought that their own world had been destroyed. This seemed plausible, when one considered their ferocity and greed, and what might be its implementation in virtue of an advanced technology. Their own world destroyed, the Kurii now wished another

meral{Bretval} 15:42:00 pm CDT
and Their favourite food is Hhumans.......shivers

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:43:54 pm CDT
yes, and delectable girls, mea, much more delicate and tender meat so kept in farms.

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:44:59 pm CDT

that is how lions and tigers look at us, it must be said. and sharks etc, just part of the food chain

ruby~{Randolph}~t 15:46:04 pm CDT

nodding
Forkbeard was not made privy to "third knowledge"

meral{Bretval} 15:46:29 pm CDT

~eyes go wide listening to Jarl~

Bretval {meral}: 15:46:43 pm CDT

The nest thing is a very long description that I include for information ... how it comes into play in this book will play out

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:47:12 pm CDT
The Kurii, being of higher intelligence simply look at humans as we would an animal - and eat them if their meat is tasty and nourishing.

ruby~{Randolph}~t 15:49:01 pm CDT
the PK's..did not think Man was a rational being...perhaps the Kurri felt the same way

Bretval {meral}: 15:50:08 pm CDT
Note: The description on the Kurii below comes to Uus courtesy of Our Physician Lita
Kurii usually range from seven to nine feet tall and weigh from seven to nine hundred pounds. Their arms are longer and larger than their legs. Their biceps are commonly about eight inches wide and their wrists are about five inches wide. Their hands are clawed and pawlike with six digits, extra-jointed, and almost like tentacles. These hand claws are usually filed allowing them to better able use tools and technological items. Most Kur are right-handed as the left hemisphere of their brain is dominant. Their hind legs are eight to ten inches wide. Though their legs are short, with their arms they can move on all fours rapidly like an ape. For short distances it can even outrun a tarsk. They are also excellent climbers. The claws on its feet are retractable, usually not filed and over four inches long. Their most common fur color is dark brown though they can also be brownish red, sable or white. A mottling of white in their coloration commonly denotes disease.

Their heads are the width of the chest of a large man with a mouth large enough to cover a man's head. The mouth contains two rows of fangs, four being prominent in the position of canines. The upper two canines are long and curved. Its tongue is dark. Their eyes are large and round, with black pupils and a yellowish cornea. They have excellent vision in the dark and their eyes adjust to light changes quicker than humans. Their ears are large, pointed and wide. They can be laid back flat against its head. Its snout is wide and leathery with two slit like nostrils. They have a tracking capacity, including both smell and hearing, equivalent to a larl though not as good as a sleen.

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:50:55 pm CDT
quite possibly. ruby. The way we look at monkeys

Bretval {meral}: 15:52:10 pm CDT
Their blood is red but the plasma has a very high percentage of salt that acts as a protein solvent. This means that they can eat vast quantities of meat, which would kill a man who tried to eat a similar amount. They also have a second stomach, a storage place where food is not digested. The food can be moved at will to their true stomach, or chemical stomach. They usually do not carry excess food and water unless when they are anticipating a time of scarcity. Additional food is a weight burden and impairs their performance. Kur also have good metabolic control and can slow or speed their digestion at will.

They speak with rumbles, snarls, growls, and half roars. Though it may sound like animal noises initially, once you listen to the noises they do form the rhythms of a language. Kurii phonemes for the most part elude representation in the alphabets of men. No known Gorean can speak the language of the Kurii. Kurii find it difficult to speak Gorean and most do not speak it. When they do speak it, it is a horrifying approximation. It does not actually hurt them to speak Gorean, it is only difficult for them to do so. They prefer to use translators when dealing with Goreans. This produces a flat, mechanical form of speech that is often awkward and choppy. Translators are notorious for being too literal at times due to the limitations of the translation.

A fearsome adversary in a conflict

Bretval {meral}: 15:54:20 pm CDT

Kurii are divided into four sexes: Dominant, Nondominant, Egg-carrier, and Blood-nursers. The order of structure in their society is the Dominant, Egg-carrier, Nondominant and Blood-nurser. The Dominants correspond roughly to the human male. Their instinct is to enter the killings and to mate. Most Kurii are born Dominants but many do not survive the killings. Nondominants are Dominants who do not join in the killings or mating. Nondominants are despicable and hated by the Dominants. Sometimes though a Nondominant will transform into a Dominant if there are no other Dominants around or the Nondominant is particularly stressed. Egg-carriers, also known as conceivers, are the ones impregnated by a Dominant. They roughly correspond to the Gorean female. They can be frequently impregnated, about once a month, which helps promote a rapid reproduction rate. An Egg-carrier is smaller than a Dominant and they do not participate in the killings. Shortly after an impregnation, within a moon, the Egg-carrier deposits the fertilized egg into a Blood-nurser. Blood-nursers, also known as Carriers, are basically baby incubators. They are sluggish, immobile and mouthed. They fasten themselves to hard surfaces. An egg will develop inside their body and the unborn receives blood from the Carrier. Some months later, the baby will tear itself free of the Carrier, likely killing the Carrier

The newborn Kur will follow the first Egg-carrier or Nondominant that it sees. It will ignore a Blood-nurser. If it sees a Dominant, its response will depend on its own sex. If the newborn is also a Dominant, it will bare its tiny fangs and claws. The Dominant will ignore the newborn. If the newborn is an Egg- carrier or Nondominant, it will shun the Dominant that might decide to kill it. The newborns live on water and common protein. They are capable of hunting small animals shortly after leaving the Blood-nurser

a lot of information..... and will be important as Wwe work through the book

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 15:56:34 pm CDT

Interesting , they seem to be ahead of humans who now seem to moving towards being multi gender

Bretval {meral}: 15:59:49 pm CDT

Something to always keep in mind. ruby is that the P-K restrict knowledge to protect Uus from Ourselves.... and what Wwe have done to Earth... including nuclear weapons....

Jarl Randolph - GS Advisor - Owner of ruby~ 16:01:16 pm CDT

sounds like the EU

Bretval {meral}: 16:05:23 pm CDT
I would not say that, Randolph... all Wwe are seeing in the attention to trans gender and homosexuality is merely what was hidden is now coming to the light... the desires were always there

ruby~{Randolph}~t 16:06:43 pm CDT
thinking this is the end of Chapter six

it should be noted that the thrall Wulfstan knows the blonde Thyri..thinks this will be part of the plot further on
